Rationality, efficient markets, and profit maximization are the primary assumptions of contemporary traditional economic theory. Under this theoretical framework, investors are expected to make rational decisions based on all available information and pursue profit maximization, while the market is expected to achieve market efficiency. However, when applying this theory to the real world, we find that the actual outcomes of market operations often do not align with these theoretical predictions. As a result, traditional financial theory has been challenged. Against this backdrop, "Behavioral Economics" provides explanations for the phenomena observed in real markets that deviate from the assumptions of traditional financial theory. Behavioral Finance, a major branch of Behavioral Economics, approaches this issue from the perspective of psychology and employs the concept of "human irrationality" to reinterpret actual market phenomena. This course will focus on how the psychological factors of non-fully rational investors influence their financial and investment decisions, leading to behavior that deviates from the expectations set by traditional financial theory.
Objectives
The first half of this course will begin with an introduction to the theoretical and empirical foundations of behavioral economics, including the thinking system and existing behavioral biases. The second half of the course will explore how behavioral biases can correct the traditional viewpoints of finance and explain empirical findings in the financial literature. Participants in this course are not required to have a background in psychology, but should have a basic knowledge of investment theory and corporate finance.
