This graduate seminar examines a pronounced move within political theory in recent times, namely, the self-reflection of political theory. Theorists have recently interrogated on the ethnocentrism of political theory. We as faculty and students will work through some of the latest materials that examine the applicability and/or tenability of Western liberal values, specifically, the value of multiculturalism in different contexts, like Asian societies. The concept of culture in political theory and political thought gained currency in the second half of the twentieth century, especially since the late 1980s. For most of the twentieth century, as the Cold War was being waged, the culture-concept was largely ignored. Privileged were sites such as ideology, nationalism, politics, economics, class, religion, and science. It was not until 1989 when the culture-concept entered liberal political theory: when the bicentennial anniversary of the French Revolution was marked, when what would become the first of many headscarf cases in France erupted; when the Berlin Wall fell; when Chinese students, protesters, and workers took their grievances to the street of Beijing, China, in what came to be known as the Tiananmen Square incident.

課程目標 Objectives |
|
For this seminar, the concept or theme around which discussions are to be organized is culture: what is culture? a universal good? a particular, that is, an ethnocentric good? why does culture matter? whose culture is being privileged? Western culture? or non-Western culture? On the way to working out answers to these questions, we shall be helped by thinking along these lines: how have scholars contributing to the literature of multiculturalism formulated this concept? who needs or wants culture?

Students are required to do the weekly readings. Grading: Reading and discussion 50% of the overall grade, writing 50%. For discussion, students will be required to present the week’s readings and lead the discussion in class. For writing, students are to choose ONE of these: Turn in 15 short essays (or think-pieces) over the course of the semester, each essay is limited to no more than 1,000 words. These short essays must be between 800 and 1,000 words. Each essay has to discuss the main idea of the assigned reading, for example, one essay per article or per book. Under no circumstances may students turn in two or more essays covering the same article or the same book. The topic of each essay is the main idea or central vision of the article or the book. The essay has to engage the main idea from an analytical perspective – not merely give a description of it. The essays should show evidence of critical and analytic thinking by making arguments. (2) Turn in two 14-to-15 page essays over the course of the semester, each essay between 4,800 and 5,000 words. For each essay, the student has to discuss at least four different books or four articles covered by the seminar. Each essay has to consider certain themes in relation to culture in general, culture in multiculturalism, or scholarly criticism of culture. The essays should be analytic in nature, neither wholly descriptive, nor wholly explanatory. (3) Turn in one 30-page essay at the end of the semester. The essay should be no more than 10,000 words including the abstract, footnotes or endnotes, and bibliography. Topics include an assessment of culture, a critique of culture, or a reflection on culture from a perspective culled from this course’s readings. The essay has to be analytic. Grading Scale: A= 96% to 100%; A- =91% to 95%, B and B- fall in the 80%s, and so on.
