If English is not your native language, do not worry. ***All students are welcome from any department and any program*** ***NSYSU and exchange students welcome*** ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Target audience: students studying in business/HRM/management/psychology/social sciences. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- No numbers and no statistics! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you would like to learn about qualitative methods and/or use them in your thesis or another project - this could be a useful course for you. If you prefer quantitative methods (lots of numbers) - I think it is still useful to learn about qualitative methods. It can help you justify your own position, and help you understand why other people use other methods. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The course will cover the following 4 areas: 1. Introduction to qualitative methods 2. Fundamentals of qualitative methods 3. What to consider and think about when planning and designing qualitative research 4. Successfully collecting qualitative data (including, focus groups, observation methods, stories, diaries, visual methods, different types of individual/group interviews, etc.). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Course Instructor: Dr. David McConville. David has a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology, from the UK. He is currently a tenure track Assistant Professor in the Institute of HRM at NSYSU. David's work has been published in applied psychology, HRM and management SSCI journals, including the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology and the International Journal of Human Resource Management.
課程目標 Objectives
This course will be useful for students who would like to develop knowledge of qualitative research methods. During this course we will discuss philosophical reasons influencing people to do qualitative research, the potential value and importance of qualitative research, the different methods you could use, and how these methods can be conducted effectively. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Assessment: The emphasis of the assessment in this course will be to set tasks that help you to develop your understanding of qualitative methods, why researchers use them, and the meaning/value of qualitative data. By the end of the course it is hoped that you will understand qualitative methods much better, and feel more confident using them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- By the end of this course, it is expected that you will: - Have a better understanding of the philosophical reasons underpinning a researcher's decision to collect qualitative data. You will be in a better position to epistemologically and ontologically justify qualitative approaches. - Understand the planning and preparation process prior to collecting qualitative data. - Have a broader understanding of qualitative options, beyond the typical 'interview approach' that most people tend to think about. - Be more cautious and rigorous when designing qualitative methods.
授課方式 Teaching methods
Classes will include presentations, discussions and activities. The class will be interactive - discussion will be encouraged. You will have a chance to practice some qualitative methods - and get a sense of how they can be used. For example, we will conduct a focus group in class - so that you can see how this method can work.
