In the new knowledge-based economy, development is disproportionately concentrated in leading metropolitan areas in Asia, Australasia, Europe, and North America. This is the effect of the Fourth Logistical Revolution, which entailed a phase transition in cultural, economic, and technological development. Global supply chains have created an integrated network of interdependent regions.
The three previous logistical revolutions all gave rise to bursts of creativity and innovation in the leading cities of each era, such as Florence, London, and Vienna. In the knowledge economy, creative cities are more numerous and dispersed. Individuals and organizations that locate in such cities have better prospects for transforming their knowledge into creative breakthroughs in a wide range of domains, ranging from the organization of work to new art forms or theories. The creative knowledge economy implies a wider knowledge base, greater connectivity, and more cultural diversity. But to reap these cultural and economic benefits, it becomes necessary to address various obstacles to change, such as rigid hierarchical decision-making in corporations, educational institutions, and state bureaucracies.
From a psychological perspective it is possible to improve individual creativity by focusing on paradoxes, deep structures, and structural uncertainties in our human and natural environments. The management of creativity in a globalized knowledge economy requires three novel priorities: diversity, instability, and tolerance.
