This course provides an overview of the essential practices for managing human resources. Throughout the semester, students will learn how to make theoretically and empirically sound decisions on how to design a job, how to attract talent, whom to hire, what to pay, how to train and develop employees, and how to evaluate performance. These practices are important because they affect employees’ motivation and ability to provide products and services that customers value, which in turn impacts an organization’s performance. Through the years, human resource management (HRM) has evolved from an administrative function (focusing on filling out forms and processing paperwork) into a more active role in supporting the organization’s strategy. Therefore, we will also discuss how effective HR strategies can be crafted to help organizations gain sustainable competitive advantages.
