課程大綱 Course syllabus

\\140.117.152.55\crs_net_data\crs_outline\1131\outline\IPS501.TXTThis course looks into the politics of Taiwan through various perspectives, from domestic politics, organisation of the government, elections, social movements, cross-strait relations to international politics.

課程目標 Objectives

         1. To define concepts and understand issues relevant to the politics of Taiwan.
2. To think critically about the domestic and international politics of Taiwan.
3. To develop skills for academic writing and presentation.
4. To develop techniques for conducting independent research.

授課方式 Teaching methods

-The course is a combination of both lecture and seminar but will be held mainly in seminar discussions.
- We will discuss four subjects in this course: (1) History of Taiwan, (2) Government & Politics, (3) Cross-strait Relations, and (4) International Relations. Students must pick three out of these four subjects in our weekly schedule.
- Student should form into groups (4~6 members). Each group should accomplish three tasks as follows:
(1) Reading summary: Student should write a summary document of assigned readings (in English, no longer than 5 pages) and give a briefing on the subject matter (no more than 20 minutes). The document should contain (a) the gist of the reading, (b) your reflections or critiques of it, (c) comparison between other assigned readings, and (d) relevant questions in regard to the readings. Students should also submit the document (in either Microsoft Word or PDF format) to the instructor on the day before the seminar via email. Student should do one reading summary before the mid-term and another one before the end-term.
(2) Final presentation: In the final seminar, students are required to give a group presentation (no more than 25 minutes) either about the book summary (choosing one book from “Further Readings”) or about their research theme on the politics of Taiwan. You can use PowerPoint to present your research.
(3) Final report: After the final presentation, each group should hand in a group report about the theme you research. The report should be written in English and no longer than 10 pages (excluding reference). The report should contain (a) your research theme, (b) your research question, (c) your explanation of why the question matters, (d) your exploration of how the question has been answered by the existing literature, if any, (e) your evaluation of whether the literature answers the question properly, and (d) your answer if the literature’s answer is dissatisfactory to you. There is no tolerance of plagiarism. Once plagiarism is found, the report goes straight to zero points. We will negotiate the deadline during the seminar.
