The purpose of this course is to help students understand cultural and institutional environment in the Asia pacific region. This course focuses on South Korea, China, Taiwan and Japan as exemplars of the commercial, developmental and political practices in the region. For example, you will learn institutions such as the Korean chaebol and key cultural mores such as Chinese guanxi. This course will also provide an overview of the challenges and opportunities for foreign company to penetrate the Asia Pacific region including ASEAN and the Australian Markets.
The first part of the course examines the attempts to industrialise key East Asian countries after the end of the Second World War. Specific attention is drawn upon South Korea and Taiwan. The metaphor of capitalist development in authoritarian states is discussed, followed by the gradual shifts towards democracy and neoliberal practices at key newly industrialised nations in the region. Also, evaluate why in the 1980s - some Taiwanese corporations made the decision to expand its operations in the mainland China. This course also focuses on ASEAN, RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) and other markets in the region. It will also highlight various issues encountered by Western companies in entering the mainland Chinese markets, and how it can overcome such issues.

課程目標 Objectives

• Firstly, understand and be able to discuss a set of key concepts regarding state development in East Asia. It is also vital to comprehend how internal as well as external forces - pressurised one-party authoritarian government institutional structures to accept and therefore implement gradual shifts towards fully fledged democratic principles. Within this context, the formation of neoliberalism as an ideological construct is analysed, which is generally categorised as the Washington Consensus, and how China, now internationalised recognised as an emerging global superpower - is providing an alternative economic and geopolitical term which is the Beijing Consensus. Against this backdrop, business and political relations between Taiwan and China are discussed by carefully examining the strategies and success of two important Taiwanese multi-national corporations – by starting and expanding key manufacturing operations at different provinces in the mainland China. The aim of this course is also to highlight how potential territorial and geopolitical conflicts in the China Sea - could have a detrimental long-term impact in the region. Furthermore, the economy of the Philippines will be discussed – as well as the relationship between China and Australia, and CANZUK (Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom).
