Introduction: Not interested in easy answers, this graduate seminar about democracy will be conducted by a political theorist from a political-theoretical perspective for students specializing in political theory. Yet, no prior knowledge of democracy is required to enroll in this graduate seminar. Students, however, should be proficient in the English language and prepared to discuss the reading assignments and give presentations based on the reading assignments in class from a political-theoretical perspective. Welcoming a wide range of views on democracy, this seminar’s central aim is to survey some of the major statements about and critical of democracy that have appeared online and in print over the past four years. Without necessarily dismissing the “oldies but goodies,” to be sure, classic statements will be discussed. So, to begin with, from first week to fifth week, we will read and discuss the most oft-cited statements about democracy, i.e., the classical model, the participatory model, and the deliberative model. From sixth week to eleventh week, once the foundational statements are discussed, we move to discuss contemporary events, e.g., elections and attempts at overturning elections in democracies around the world. Students are welcome to suggest a topic, theme, case, or question during this segment of the class. Finally, from twelfth week to sixteenth week (with seventeenth and eighteenth weeks set aside for flexible learning), we will read and discuss journal articles within the last four years, or so, about and critical of democracy from a variety of theoretical perspectives.

Requirements: Reading and discussion 50% of the overall grade, writing 50%. Discussion entails giving presentations based on reading assignments in class and asking questions that open up and critically engage with the readings. ALL the students are required to give presentations. For writing, students choose ONE of these: (1) Turn in 6 three-to-five-page essays (think-pieces), one every three weeks. Each essay has to discuss a different article or a different book of the course. Under no circumstances may students turn in two or more essays covering the same book or same article. The topic of each essay is the main idea or central vision of the book or article being discussed. The essay has to engage the main idea from an analytical perspective – not merely give a description of it. The essays should show evidence of critical and analytic thinking by making arguments, not summarizing ideas. (2) Turn in two 13-to-15-page essays over the course of the semester. For each essay, the student has to discuss at least five different articles and/or books covered by the course. Each essay has to take a position on how a right to democracy can be defended, if it can be defended. The two essays have to take different positions. If the essay is a defense, then it has to consider to what extent the right to democracy can be implemented in a concrete manner. If the essay is a critique, then it has to demonstrate why democracy’s reach cannot be global in a complete sense. Again, the essays should be analytic in nature, neither wholly descriptive, nor wholly explanatory. (3) Turn in one 30-page essay at the end of the semester. The essay should be no more than 12,000 words – excluding the abstract, notes, and bibliography. Possible topics include the defense of a human right to democracy, a critique of this right, or a reflection on human rights from a perspective culled from this course’s readings. The essay should be analytic in nature. Students are welcome to propose their own topics. Instructor will work with students and help turn their papers into publishable papers. Students are welcome to propose their own topics, but these topics must be proposed by the students and approved by the professor at least three weeks prior to writing. Grading Scale: A= 96% to 100%; A- =90% to 95%, B and B- fall in the 80%s, and so on. Do not “cut and paste” any material. Do not use ChatGPT or AI bot to write. Write your paper by yourself. Cheaters flunk the seminar automatically and will be referred to the dean for expulsion. Readings by Week (subject to change as new materials appear)
