課程大綱 Course syllabus

         █ Course Overview
This course is designed to introduce students to the international relations discipline, using a global politics approach. It will familiarize students with the theories and concepts essential for understanding contemporary international relations.
█ Course Instructor
Brian C. H. Fong is a political scientist originating from Hong Kong. He is currently Professor in the College of Social Sciences at the National Sun Yat-sen University, Taiwan. Previously, he was Assistant Professor and later Associate Professor in the Department of Asian and Policy Studies at the Education University of Hong Kong (Dec 2013 to Feb 2022), Lecturer in the Division of Social Sciences of the City University of Hong Kong (Dec 2007 to Dec 2013) and Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Government (Aug 2001 to Dec 2007).
Professor Fong’s research focuses on great power competition, democratization, and identity politics, producing more than 80 journal articles, book chapters, and authored books, etc. He is also the lead editor of several international book volumes, including Routledge Handbook of Great Power Competition and China’s Influence and the Center-periphery Tug of War in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Indo-Pacific.

課程目標 Objectives

         Students who successfully undertake this course will:
• Grasp the concepts and theories essential for understanding international relations;
• Adopt a “global politics framework” in examining contemporary international relations; and
• Make use of qualitative / quantitative techniques to carry out research projects.

授課方式 Teaching methods

         The classes will normally be held every Friday at 14:10 to 17:00 in the College of Social Sciences (SS4001). Each class will cover the following components:
• PowerPoints Lectures on key concepts, theories, and cases.
• Virtual immersive learning, e.g., “Virtual Tours” to historical-political sites in different countries and territories via Google Map Street View.
• Group exercises, e.g., “Think-Pair-Share” exercises based on a question posed by the Course Instructor, “Collaborative Online Research” exercises.
