The creative industries include a range of economic activities which generate or exploit knowledge, information, or intellectual property. In Europe, the creative industries may primarily mean cultural industries, which are the focus of this course. This course discusses the characteristics of cultural products, including their production and distribution. We will introduce the practical issues in these industries, such as famous antitrust cases in the movie industry or the impact of unauthorized copying on the recorded music industry, through the eyes of economists and law scholars. We will not put much emphasis on unrealistic and abstract theories, which you may face in many courses discussing “cultural phenomenon,” “cultural studies,” or “creative thinking.” Talking these abstract theories may make you look smart, but it may also make you look impractical/ungrounded from the eyes of practitioners and artists. In the beginning of this course, we will introduce basic concepts and characteristics of cultural industries. Then, we will closely examine the details of some specific cultural industries. This semester, we will pick music, movie, and TV industries. Because we will use some concepts in economics, statistics, and law while analyzing the issues in cultural industries, we strongly suggest you have a basic understanding in these subjects before you take this course. Your grade will be basically based on a group project. In the end of the first month, we will require you to make a proposal presentation, where you should briefly report the topic or question you pick for the project. The topic and question should be relevant to creative industries. We will modify/narrow your idea and provide some methodology suggestions. In the end of semester, you are required to make an oral presentation for the results of your project. In the final presentation, we will also randomly pick another group to make a detailed comments/critiques for each result report. Your performance in proposal presentation, result presentation, and comment will be all graded.
