This course discusses the economics approach to detailed interactions among market participants and provides students a further insight into markets. Economists believe that market participants are smart and self-interested, and we can see strategic behaviors everywhere. In the last decades, game theory is proved to be a powerful tool to analyze strategic interactions within markets and societies; more and more studies have a game theoretical framework. Therefore, this course will focus on the game theory and its application on the analysis of markets. In the first half of this course, I will introduce components of a normal form game and an extensive form game, and explain the ideas behind various equilibria, such as Nash equilibrium. I will also introduce repeated games. In the second half of this course, I plan to discuss several applications of game theory. I will discuss issues regarding oligopoly, vertical relationships between firms, and principal-agent problems. Your grade will be basically based on exams and an oral presentation or practice teaching. For the practice teaching, each individual will be asked to present a topic or paper using game-theoretical models to an imaged scenario of market interactions, such as competition, entry barriers. By this practice, you can see more discussion on strategic interactions among market participants and examples regarding the use of the game theory. Moreover, you can also have a chance to improve your teaching skills in this practice.
