Course syllabus

本課程教學大綱已提供完整英文資訊(本選項僅供統計使用,未提供完整英文資訊者,得免勾記)【Provide information of course syllabus in English.(This is for statistical use only. For those who do not provide information of course syllabus in English, do not check this field.)】

This course draws heavily from the key concepts, frameworks, and tools of the Competitive Dynamics Perspective, which is named by the Harvard Business Review as the “Competitive Advantage of Post-Porter Era”. Because of an ever-shifting business environment and competitive landscape, it emphasizes the dynamic aspects of strategic management.
The soundness of a firm’s strategy and actions—and even its performance—must be considered in the competitive context. Business competition is both dynamic and relative, and it is defined by the interplay between companies as they constantly juggle their market positions by exchanging moves and countermoves. The course provides class participants with an integrative framework and specific analytical tools for understanding how firms interact in the marketplace—within an industry, across industries, and beyond national borders. The premise of the course holds that when a company initiates a strategic action, it should be prepared to meet potential counteractions from rivals. Understanding the relative nature of this dynamic process is the key to building and sustaining competitive advantage.
Topics include developing and evaluating strategy, developing firm capability and sustaining competitive advantage, analyzing industry evolution and competitive dynamics, and linking strategy and execution. Course objectives are accomplished through exposure to cases from a range of industries and managerial settings to foster an integrative mindset that will enable MBAs to operate at multiple levels and in different functions in their business careers.

Objectives

         1. To foster an action-oriented strategic-thinking perspective.
2. To help participants develop a dynamic perspective in dealing with competition and competitors.
3. To prepare participants to help their companies engage effectively with competitors and partners—both locally and internationally.
4. To hone participants’ ability to identify and analyze strategic issues fundamental to a firm’s sustained success.
5. To strengthen participants’ understanding of the internal and external factors relevant to the development and execution of a firm’s strategy.
6. To develop a learning community through intense interactions among all members of the class.

Teaching methods

         * Lecture, Question- and issue-oriented dialogue, Case discussion, Practices Assignments
* The instructor will use the Socratic method to help class participants develop a strategic-question mindset that will ultimately benefit both their business and personal endeavors.
