課程大綱 Course syllabus

Preface: The formation and mitigation of urban, transportation, and environmental problems are deeply associated with people's perceptions of objective phenomena, and the problems are often deadlocked in social dilemmas where an undesirable collective action tendency is stable. Thus, although hard infrastructure construction or technology development could improve the problems, it is still necessary, given natural resource and government finance limitations, to rely on the soft approaches to transforming people from demand compliance and resource waste into sustainable behavior. The purpose of opening this course is to make students comprehend the psychological and behavioral effects on people's daily decisions and the theories and mechanisms of how soft measures can change society.

Greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the pursuit of a modern lifestyle have led urban land use patterns and transport systems to change for environmental sustainability. However, the conventional "hard measures" have often been impeded by financial infeasibility, public opposition, or political concerns. Thus, in addition to aiming at infrastructure and regulations, urban environment management should pay attention to "soft measures" for changing people's perceptions and behavior. This course aims to answer the question: how to transform people from a daily habit of environmentally harmful behavior into pro-environmental behavior without resorting to reward and punishment? This exploration contains three parts.

Part I: Theory goes through the causes of environmental problems from the perspectives of cognitive psychology, social interactions, and collective action dilemmas, and two distinct types of solutions (hard and soft measures) changing people's perceptions and behavior and their functioning mechanisms.

Part II: Practice discusses the techniques and programs of psychological and behavioral modification in the practice of urban environment and mobility management.

Part III: Changing Society guides students to reflect on the issues of the urban environment and conduct a social experiment or an involvement scheme, applying approaches to changing people's perceptions and behavior, to improve environmental sustainability.

課程目標 Objectives

This course involves the causes of and measures for urban environmental problems from psychological and behavioral perspectives. It leads students to (1) explore the relationships among human behavior, psychology, and urban environments, (2) understand soft measures for people's pro-environmental motivations and behavior, and (3) engage in improving environmental sustainability by actually changing society.
