This course focuses on the past, present, and future of the developed West. The first part of the course deals with the economic and political processes after 1945 that shaped European and North American economies and political institutions, such as the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and the European Union. The second part focuses on the ongoing transformation of the developed West into a knowledge-based postindustrial society, as well as on challenges such as persistent unemployment in some regions and the political backlash against postmodern values among a substantial minority of disaffected citizens. The third and final part of the course looks ahead towards the socioeconomic and political future of the postindustrial West.
