This course aims to present students a general overview of the conflicting debates the subject of the environment has generated amongst business corporations, political groups, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and influential individuals. How the institutional architecture of Globalisation has transformed the way power relations/structures interact – as well as challenge and displace their positions of dominance are carefully assessed. Furthermore, the rise of consumerism as an ideological construct is explored, and to what extent a universal identity that is fundamentally ‘brand’ driven has crystallised in recent years. Leadership, environment, profit, music, sports, fashion trend, consumer, gender, race and class themes are discussed throughout the course. Additionally, with case studies, there is particular emphasis upon Taiwan’s current business operations and strategies.
Within the 3Ps (People, Planet and Profit) of the sustainability narrative, this course provides a comprehensive evaluation of the multiple intrinsic power transactions taking place in a wide range of contexts. These operations influence political practices, government policies, as well as corporate strategies which aim to guarantee ‘Profit’ sustainability at all levels. A key element of the environment lecture discussions in the ‘Course Outline’ section, which is also referred to with the term ‘Planet’; is to analyse what the ‘People’ entails - within the power dynamics of Sustainability and Global Enterprise. In order to unveil the different characteristics at play, music as a vehicle, sports as a business, changing fashion trends, consumerism, gender difference, racial preference and class struggles will be discussed in the course.




課程目標 Objectives

         Firstly, understand and be able to discuss a set of key concepts regarding the power dynamics within the sustainability narrative and the social, organisational and political operations promoting it. Also, those influential business and political bodies that reject the discursive significance of sustainability from a local, regional and global entrepreneurial perspective. Thirdly, the environmental development paradigm is discussed, and how institutions have shifted. Furthermore, how globalisation obstructs or endorses the sustainability debate, leadership in the mix, consumerism and environmental consciousness.
Encourage students to comprehend what the logic of sustainability entails, and therefore encourage them to apply these key concepts to their own research business interests, work responsibilities, non-governmental organisations, or other social group with which are involved in these processes.



授課方式 Teaching methods

         Your attendance, preparation, and participation are essential to contribute to the success of the course. Attendance will be recorded each week. Excessive absences (more than two) will not be tolerated; each absence will be penalised with a 5% reduction of the overall grade. You may be dismissed from the course. Students should inform the instructor of any absences. With a valid reason, such as illness, injury, personal problems or unforeseen circumstances – missing lectures will be accepted.
The mid-term ‘Written Exam’ will be two Open Questions (50% each question). The structural-template outlined in the Essay Structure (see Lecture 6) will be expected in the exam. How to answer exam questions effectively will be discussed during the lectures. In a Written Exam, you can clearly 1) express what you have learned; 2) show how you interpret and articulate key theoretical concepts with empirical cases; and 3) develop a systematic approach to think, prepare and write under time-pressure (i.e. 60 minutes).
The Essay should be max. 2000 words (anything above this word limit will not be graded). Also, late submissions will not be accepted.
