This course reviews and examines theories and research on culture and how it relates to various aspects of organisation and management. We will first examine conceptualisations of culture, theoretical perspectives linking culture to behaviour, methodological issues in conducting cross- cultural research, as well as recent research on the ways in which cultures vary. We will then examine how culture affects psychological processes and organisational behaviours including motivation, cognition, social networking, leadership, and teams. Complex organisations as dynamic sociocultural systems. Topics include organisational culture, cross-cultural study of organisations, organisational ethnography, cultural diversity, organisational learning and relevance of a cultural approach to enhance organisational effectiveness in a rapidly-changing world. This course will draw both on academic research, and on industry practice. Students will be encouraged to apply the course concepts to cases that are of particular interest to them. These applications will be developed through participation, as well as through assignments.

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to: 1. describe and analyse the cultural dimensions of organisations and their relationships with a complex environments; 2. analyse an organisation as a sociocultural system that affects the people who interact with it; 3. describe how people from have organised themselves to accomplish collective goals; 4. collect and analyse data about organisations and expressions of culture within them; 5. describe and analyse the cultural dimensions of organisations and their relationships with a complex environments; 6. describe organisations as arenas in which larger social issues are expressed, negotiated, and managed; 7. develop tools for more effective action within organisations.
授課方式 Teaching methods
The course will combine short lectures based on the history of work, contemporary OC practices across the world, group activities and presentations. A guest speaker will be confirmed closer to the date.
