Why should you take this course? Why are some products more highly valued than their competitors? Why are some products and companies wildly successful while consumers hardly pay attention to the offerings of other organizations? Faced with these questions, many students (probably including you!) come up with ad hoc explanations having to do with the characteristics of the product itself, the innovativeness of the entrepreneur, or the activities of the company. However, students typically do not take the bigger picture of how the product fits into the market into account. To understand this bigger picture, organizational theorists have turned to a sociological conception of markets classified into a number of market categories. Market categories shape the expectations of consumers in such a way that producers who do not fit neatly into established market categories are less successful. Organizations spanning categories are penalized in terms of less attention, lower sales, and, ultimately, failure. Management scholars are increasingly agreeing that categories are crucial for making markets. In this course, we will critically study this highly active and vibrant area of management research with the goal to understand how categories shape markets. While most courses assign readings to attain course objectives, this course is designed so that together we collect and decide on the literature to read for this course. The course thus trains you to not only understand how categories shape the valuation and success of products, but also to identify, collect, and read the literature in one field. To develop your understanding of how categories make markets, you will complete a number of assignments. You will need to identify the main argument in scientific studies, toward the mid-way point of the semester you will write an integrated assessment of the literature we have read so far, and you need to write a strong research proposal at the end of the semester
課程目標 Objectives
What should you be able to do by the end of this course? At the end of this course, you are able to: 1. Give your interpretation of the scholarly literature on how categories make markets 2. Review and critically discuss academic papers 3. Integrate a large body of scholarly work into a proper research proposal with a strong theoretical question embedded in scholarly literature, clear research hypotheses derived from the literature review, and a solid methodological approach for data analysis to test the research hypotheses

Assignments and evaluations This class consists of a number of smaller and bigger assignments, which all count towards your final grade: 1. WWWW: Before coming to class, briefly answer four questions on a piece of paper: a. What is the main thing the paper tries to explain? b. What is the answer given in the paper? (Specify the entire conceptual framework, including the dependent variable (DV), the main independent variables (IV’s), and how and why the IV’s shape the DV) c. What other answers for the main question is the author considering? What other answers do you know from other classes? Which answer do you think is more convincing? Why? d. What three questions related to the reading do you want to discuss in class? These can be questions to clarify your understanding of the reading, but also questions that allow us to explore connections and contradictions between various readings in this class or in other classes? We will use your WWWW’s to structure our discussion in class, and after class you can hand them in to me You are expected to write a WWWW for every week with assigned reading materials (12 weeks). Every WWWW is worth 1 point (out of the total score of 100), and you will receive 3 extra points if you hand in all 12 WWWWs 2. Integrated assessment: Each student needs to hand in an integrated assessment of all readings discussing the role of categories in markets. In your integrated assessment, you need to discuss all the topics we have covered in this class up to that point. Moreover, you need to identify areas where you think there is still a lot of potential for future research or where there are still many questions open for future research to examine. Your integrated assessment cannot exceed 8 pages (font size 11, double spaced, standard office margins) including all text, tables, figures, and references. You need to hand in your integrated assessment on 5/12 during class 3. Research proposal: Students are expected to work independently on a research proposal during the semester. The research proposal should contain an introduction, a literature review, and a section detailing data and methods. Research proposals are evaluated based on whether students identify a clear and important research question related to the categorization literature, provide a thorough and well-structured literature review, show that they know how to conduct the research by providing a thought-through methodological approach, and a strong conclusion. Research proposals can be 15 pages long (font size 11, double spaced, standard office margins) including all text, tables, and figures, but excluding references). Research proposals can be written in English or Chinese. The deadline for research proposals is June 23! There are no exceptions to this date. The weight of these assignments in the final grade is as follows:
