Over the past 20 years, a body of strategic management literature has emerged that analyzes interfirm competition from a managerial and organizational viewpoint. Competitive dynamics, as it is now known in the management field, provides an important link between micro and macro areas as well as a crucial, leading-edge bridge between the fields of strategy and organizational research. It is one of the major “home-grown” research topics in the field of strategic management (others include the resource-based view (RBV) of the firm and the upper-echelons perspective or top management teams (TMT) research) and has received significantly inter-disciplinary attention.
Competitive dynamics adopts an organizational-behavioral perspective to study the important topic of interfirm competition. The perspective draws thoughtfully on various disciplines and complements existing disciplinary frameworks by relaxing their assumptions, integrating ideas from several theoretical lenses, and by spanning multiple analytical levels to examine vital phenomena that have previously been unrecognized or unexplored. This micro-macro balanced approach has recently stimulated interest among organizational behavior scholars to apply competitive dynamics ideas at the micro level. As a result, this course expects to identify promising research topics that are applicable to various disciplines in the field of management.
