This course provides an overview of the dynamism, opportunities, and challenges of the Asia Pacific business environment. Topics to be covered include the political, economic, social-cultural and institutional environment in the Asia pacific region. Summarily, this course is divided into two parts: The first part focuses on East Asia major economies: China, Japan and Asian Tigers (Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan) as exemplars of the commercial, developmental and political practices in the region. For example, you will learn institutions such as the Korean Chaebol (Samsung) and Japanese Keiretsu, and the impact of Chinese Guanxi on business model. It will also highlight various issues encountered by Western companies in entering the mainland Chinese markets, and how it can overcome such issues. The rise and demise of Asian tiger economies (South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong) will also be discussed. The second part of the course focuses on ASEAN and the Australian Markets. It will highlight ASEAN high GDP growth rates and pro-business policies, and as alternative investment destination beyond East Asia for foreign investors. The final lecture of this course addresses the evolving risk landscape in Asia Pacific with concluding case study on why Australian companies failed in their overseas venture?
