This course focuses on the past, present, and future of the European economy. The first part of the course deals with the economic and political processes after 1945 that shaped the European economy and its political institutions, such as the European Union. The second part focuses on Europe’s ongoing transformation into a knowledge-based postindustrial society, as well as on challenges such as persistent unemployment in some parts of Europe and the political backlash against postmodern values among a substantial minority of disaffected citizens. The third and final part of the course looks ahead towards Europe’s future role in the world economy.
