Part 1 / Quantitative Research Methods (weeks 2-8 / 50% of semester grade):
This is a state-of-the-art course on Social Science Research. It attempts to impart a basic understanding of the various business research techniques currently employed by major corporations as well as small and medium enterprises. Exposition of these techniques will be offered along two dimensions: theoretical and practical. While this is a course in research methods, the problem contexts used to illustrate the various concepts will be managerial. The course has a strong applied and managerial orientation that is relevant to the current management environment. In discussing the research techniques, the emphasis will be on applied aspects unique to the data and not on methodological elegancies. After taking this course, students will be able to demonstrate a good understanding social science research concepts, and apply them to address real-life situations.
-
Part 2 / Qualitative Research Methods (weeks 9-18 / 50% of semester grade):
Part 2 of the research methodology course is designed to help you to undertake a research project, whether as a student of business and management at National Sun Yat-sen University, or later on in your career as a manager. This course provides an overview of the central themes of doing qualitative research in business and management and discusses their relevance both in scientific and practical terms. The course provides a clear guide from thinking of your research project to writing your research report. It highlights the realities of undertaking research, including its common pitfalls, develops your capacity to use the basic qualitative research methods in business and management, and develops your critical thinking ability. The content of the course is
academically rigorous, at the same time engaging and accessible, and will be delivered in a manner that fosters and facilitates development of your own research interests.

課程目標 Objectives

         Part 1 / Quantitative Research Methods (weeks 2-8 / 50% of semester grade):
The first objective for every topic in the course will be to raise in students the awareness of relevant questions and problems – actual, diverse and complex. We will then steer through the array of tools and options available.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Identify in a clear manner what could market research deliver in a specific challenge.
2. Chart expectations and resources involved when contacting an in-house or external research project manager or analyst.
3. Appraise and help fine-tuning a proposed research design.
4. Follow up and oversee research execution.
5. Prompt that the analysis is fully substantiated and reaps all the information and its conditions.
6. Overall, to ensure that research goes over information-oriented levels to action-oriented support at the managerial scene. Other more general or cross-disciplinary objectives in this course are skills in debating business cases, in delivering presentations and, most likely, in logical thinking and rhetoric.
-
Part 2 / Qualitative Research Methods (weeks 9-18 / 50% of semester grade):
After completing this course, you will be able to:
• Outline the purpose and distinct focus of qualitative management research;
• Understand the choices and stages you will need to complete (and revisit) as
part of your research process;
• Make informed choices about qualitative research design, data collection, and analysis;
• Write and present your research proposal.
