The purpose of this course is to examine the interactions between politics and economic strategies and their consequences. It also seeks to understand the global trend towards neo-liberalism and democracy of the past three decades. How the institutional architecture of Globalization has transformed the way power relations/structures interact – as well as challenge and displace their position of dominance are carefully assessed. Furthermore, the rise of consumerism as an ideological construct is explored, and to what extent a universal identity that is fundamentally ‘brand’ driven has crystallized in recent years. Leadership, environment, music, sports, gender, race and class themes are discussed throughout the course. Additionally, with case studies, there is particular emphasis upon Taiwan’s current business operations and strategies.
課程目標 Objectives
1. Understand and be able to discuss a set of key concepts regarding power dynamics, political practices, development, institutions, globalisation, leadership, consumerism and identity. 2. Apply key concepts to your research business interests, work responsibilities, non-governmental organisations, or other social group with which you are involved in. 3. Integrate these concepts and skills with other business courses so that you will be better able to apply these tools in the future. 4. Be able to learn more effectively from your personal and professional experiences, identify how political and business dynamics try to determine our future, and assess how Taiwan’s social fabric is gradually changing due to internal as well as external pressures.
授課方式 Teaching methods
To achieve our objectives we will use multiple learning strategies, such as actual cases of organisational practices, videos, experiential exercises and experiences, team projects, lectures, guest speakers, and fieldwork activities. Learning how to observe, diagnose, and intervene into actual case situations - will be a major part of the course structure. Most importantly, however, your preparation and involvement in class discussions and activities is an important element in both your learning and that of your classmates. Thus, contributing to the joint learning of all through both preparation prior to class and regular, active participation in class activities is expected and will be considered in your overall grade.
