課程大綱 Course syllabus

This course will focus on selected Canadian writing in English in an effort to explore the concerns on what defines “contemporaneity” as seen in the fragmented aesthetics of the past decades. Individually these works contain and contest as well some of the major themes and theses on “garrison mentality.” Through a combination of close critical reading, analysis of spatial representation, and theoretical reflection, we will try to examine what local knowledge and history Canadian writers call upon, how place influences subjects to situate themselves within and outside of communities, and to what extent the densely textured milieus open up the emptiness and the oppressiveness of the Canadian landscape.

課程目標 Objectives

The works selected will be studied to suggest that the use of aesthetic discourses of Canadian writers—in particular, problematization of history and space in literature--be innovative sensitivities and possibilities for further elaborating questions of writing “here and now” in Canada.
