This course focuses on two themes: (1) the transformation of a national financial system under the wave of globalization , and (2) the causes ,impacts and policy implications of the 2008-2009 global financial storms. In order to discuss the first theme in a solid way , this course chooses the German Financial System as a focuses example. The reason for this choice is that had ever tried since the 1990’s to transform its financial system from being bank-oriented to being bank- as well as market-oriented , and German case is commonly seen as paradigm by other countries. This theme deals with the changes in banking , insurance , securities and also corporate governance. Regarding the second theme , this course chooses the U.S case to inspect the details of the 2008-2009 global financial storm. On this solid base , this course explores weakness of U.S Financial System , which was ever seen as a benchmark for other countries financial transformation. Future policy changes are also suggested here.
Objectives
Through the discussion of two themes, this course hopes that students have a whole and deep understanding of an evolving modern financial system, and are able to forecast the future of this system.
