Urban transportation is derived from urban activities determined by land use, socio-economy, and behavioral patterns. To clarify the formation mechanisms of transportation phenomena, this course goes through how transportation policymakers or planners should consider urban features in addition to transportation systems. Moreover, the goal of modern urban transportation is not only to simply meet the demands of urban activities, but to reduce and manage travel demands to improve environmental sustainability. Thus, this course also discusses vehicle use reduction, public transportation use promotion, and humanized environment for active travel such as walking and cycling, involving mass communication and social marketing to achieve transportation goals. Although these aspects center around urban transportation planning, this course partly includes transportation policy, management, and engineering to reach a comprehensive understanding of urban transportation.
