課程大綱 Course syllabus

         This course will lead students in examining Taiwan’s political and economic development through following the process of Taiwan’s democratic transition. Based on the historical trajectory of Taiwan’s political experiences (Part I), students will learn different aspects of Taiwan’s governmental and political process before and after Taiwan’s democratization process, including party politics, constitutional reforms, identity politics, economic development, and Taiwan’s role in Asia-Pacific regional politics (Part II). We will then discuss the distinct features of Taiwan’s democracy (Part III), and its possible challenges (Part IV). This course aims to offer students a comprehensive understanding of Taiwan’s political development and its (future) roles in East Asian region.

課程目標 Objectives

         The course proposes to enable students to:
A. Acquire a comprehensive understanding of the trajectory of Taiwan’s path to democracy and its characteristics by reviewing historical narratives and empirical studies on Taiwan’s democratic transition, consolidation, and its consequences and significance in the Asia-Pacific region.
B. Learn different perspectives and theoretical explanations of Taiwan’s democratic transition, democratic practices, and evaluations of Taiwan’s democratic consolidation.

授課方式 Teaching methods

          The course will be conducted in lectures.
 Aside from paper submission, students are required to:
A. Perform group representations (2 times or more), which must include summaries of the assigned text, research questions and discussions.
B. Read assigned materials before classes and participate in discussions in class.
