***All students are welcome from any department and any program*** ***NSYSU and exchange students welcome*** ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The course: People don't always agree on what is right or wrong! Can we always 'know' what is right or wrong? Pollution, the fast-food industry, prison labor, animal rights, fair trade, the universal declaration of human rights, marketing in the fashion industry, exploitation of workers in developing countries, the interests of affected vs influential stakeholders, long term vs short term business strategies, gender pay gaps, the purpose and value of nature and our relationship with the world around us, vegetarianism....the list goes on. We will discuss and debate many ethical questions and issues in relation to the business world! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ethical theories (a common one you might have heard of is utilitarianism, another is ethical relativism) can help develop understanding of how people come to conclusions and use information. We will look at topical business issues (including at least 1 mini in-class debates each week) - and the philosophy influencing different conclusions about what is right or wrong. Many things, including culture, ethics, morals, and a person's own personal values, can shape how we see the world and what we value. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Assessment: The emphasis of the assessment in this course will be to set tasks that allow you to develop your critical faculties through discussion, listening to others, debating, and questioning. You will be given opportunities to improve how you construct arguments, and how you apply logic, reasoning and evidence. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Course Instructor: Dr. David C McConville. David has a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology, from the UK. He is currently a tenure track Assistant Professor in the Institute of Human Resource Management at NSYSU. David's work has been published in applied psychology, HRM and management SSCI journals, including the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology and the International Journal of Human Resource Management. (He supports two football teams, Tottenham Hotspur and Celtic). ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Profile Page: https://sites.google.com/view/cvdavidmc/home ------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have any questions about the course, feel free to e-mail me!
課程目標 Objectives
Students will be encouraged to think independently, challenge established theory, reflect on the subjects discussed, and develop views and perspectives on ethics (in the context of business and management issues). The objective is for students to become more aware of business ethics and the implications for managers, while developing critical thinking and ethical decision making skills. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This course will help students develop an understanding of business ethics and current debates in this field. The course will explore what ethical and unethical business practice consists of by providing clear explanations of a number of ethics theories, demonstrating how they can be used to analyze the ethicality of business activity.
授課方式 Teaching methods
The course will mix some theory with a large amount of discussion and debate. Documentaries, films, case studies and news items will be integrated into the classes to help students think about real-life ethical dilemmas. During the course students will discuss and debate philosophical, ethical and moral questions and explore topical issues affecting businesses and managers.
