This is a course on International and Comparative Human Resource Management. Currently international companies and governmental organizations are increasingly faced with diversity issues and international regulations because of globalization. The management of diversity, cultural differences, different institutional environments, and social innovation is increasingly considered the cornerstone of the success of international organizations. In this perspective, students should be aware of the complexity of managing a diverse, multicultural workforce in a complex international environment. This course develops the necessary competencies to cope with these challenges with the help of a learning experience in an international group of students from US, EU, and East Asia. Contents The following topics will be discussed in the course: • CULTURE: an insight in the multifaceted definitions of culture (based on sociological, psychological and anthropological insights). • CULTURE AND MANAGEMENT: the theories of Hofstede, Globe studies, and other authors. Theoretical and practical insight on cultural differences in the implementation of management. • CULTURAL DIVERSITY: definition of diversity, how to manage diversity in an organization, examples of diversity policies • UNIVERSALITY VERSUS CONTEXTUAL HRM: institutional theory, convergence and divergence in HRM, the Anglo-Saxon/Rhineland/Asian/and other models of HRM • THE REALITY OF INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS: NGO, international public organizations, multinationals: how they can be defined and how they work • TOPICS IN EXPAT POLICIES: recruiting expatriates, geographical and strategic issues, international performance management
課程目標 Objectives
After the course students will be able to: • Analyze the implications of different cultural environments of organizations • Compare the HRM policies of US, EU, and East Asia based international organizations • Analyze an expat policy • Understand the contextual approach of HRM (institutional differences, legal issues, role of trade unions and employer organizations)
授課方式 Teaching methods
This course is an online course in which students will attend virtual lectures and complete coursework online alongside students from the University of Ghent and Baruch University. Students at Baruch University and National Sun Yat-sen University can make use of traditional office hours held weekly by Professor Muhleisen and Professor Shih, respectively. Ghent University students will have virtual office hours over Skype, and teaching hours during the lessons. Students are responsible for viewing the instructional materials, readings, PowerPoint presentations and virtual lectures on Zephyr. Zephyr is also the platform over which group work should be conducted for the student project.
