課程大綱 Course syllabus

         General Chemistry covers the fundamentals of modern chemistry at the college level. Lecture will guide you through the important material, help with difficult
concepts, and apply principles in solving problems. Since a broad spectrum of chemical subjects will be discussed in a relatively short period of time, the course demands time and effort. And, it is required to fulfill homework assignment on time, no extension can be granted.

課程目標 Objectives

         A student who has successfully completed this module/subject will be able to:
(i) outline the historical development of the structure of the atom and to list the contribution made to the structure of an atom by electrons, protons and neutrons:
(ii) use a periodic table to determine the electronic configurations of the elements and explain the relationship between the electronic configuration of an element and its chemical properties;
(iii) define ionisation enthalpy, electron affinity, and electronegativity, and to explain the trends in these and other properties in the periodic table;
(iv) identify the type of bonding that exists in simple compounds and explain the relationship between bonding and the physical properties of compounds;
(v) predict and explain the shapes of covalently bonded molecules and ions;
(vi) solve stoichiometric problems involving amounts of materials (mass and mole amounts) and concentrations (mass and mole concentrations;
(vii) perform the calculations associated with the each of the exercises in the practical programme

授課方式 Teaching methods

         Absences. Attendance for lecture days is not mandatory; however, unannounced quizzes will be given periodically (i.e., "pop" quizzes). Note: There are no quiz make-ups. Even without this incentive, it has been my experience that better attendance makes for better grades.
Quizzes & Assignments. I will administer several quizzes and/or homework assignments. Homework must be turned when the class starts on the days due.
Final Exam. The final exam is mostly cumulative.
Academic Honesty. No cheating is allowed. Student caught cheated grading failed for the course.
