Course syllabus

“The Allusions in Western Cultures” is designed to provide the college students with a compact introduction to the Western cultural tradition. In Taiwan, college students should not merely study English as a “practical” foreign language, but also learn the cultural and literary traditions in which language plays a significant role. To achieve these goals, this course introduces and analyzes Greek and Roman Mythology and The Scriptures—two Western literary classics—for students to assist them in understanding the roots and development of European cultural traditions. Also, this course aims to enhance students’ reading skills as well as students’ abilities of appreciating literary texts. In the first half of the semester, “The Allusions in Western Cultures” will introduce and explore the stories from Greek and Roman Mythology. After midterm examination, this course shall lead students into the realm The Scriptures—including both Old Testament and New Testament—so as to explore the mythological allusions in Western cultures.
(The Stories about Jacob and Joseph)、「出埃及記」、大衛王的故事、「所羅門王的審判」、約伯的故事、耶穌基督的一生等經典故事。
