課程大綱 Course syllabus

         Symmetry. Crystal structure, reciprocal lattice, Brillouin zones. X-ray, neutron, and electron diffraction crystallography. Lattice dynamics. Phonon spectroscopy. Thermal properties of crystals. Phase transitions. Soft modes. Electronic structure of solids. Fermi surfaces. Semiconductors. Transport of heat and electricity. Fermi statistics, Fermi surfaces. Landau quantization. Low-dimensional structures.

課程目標 Objectives

         Designed for entry-level graduate students or upper-division undergraduates. Study of the quantum theory of crystalline solids, acquiring abilities to read literature of condensed matter physics and write reports of professional journal formats. Learning problem-solving skills by problem formulation and solution finding using analytic and computational methods.

授課方式 Teaching methods

         Class lectures, interactive discussion forum (students are required to join online forum), independent study, group study, computer projects. The class lectures will be video-recorded to serve as the content of a future digital-learning course (pending approval by the Ministry of Education).
