課程大綱 Course syllabus |

This course surveys the developmental history of physics as an academic subject and its great thinkers' contributions at various critical times. The history is reviewed according to each revolutionary conceptual changes, involved human intelligence, and the ingenious experiments designed to verify those key ideas. Philosophical argumentation, civil or uncivil, also played a major part in the development of physics. Indeed, compiling the chronology of human intellectual struggles in attempting to interpret what was observed in nature provides an easy guide to the history of science, especially that of physics. Hence the course will also look at the past from sociological perspectives. Starting from revolutionary discoveries in the 16th century by Galileo, followed by Newton, Einstein, etc., we will walk through various monumental stages of paradigm shift, and examine how the giants resolve their disputes, from which we wish to gain insight into how revolutions took place so that we would be rightly prepared for the next outburst of revolution.

課程目標 Objectives |
|
There is no prerequisite for this self-contained course, designed for those who are curious, aiming to understand why physics came to be the booster of modern human civilization. Physics major may find the course helpful to their career decisions, one way or another. Study of history is to learn from the past in quest of the future. History is itself also a science: it studies people, what they do, and the outcome of their deeds. Thus, investigations of the key historical figures, their personal traits as much as their thoughts, would all help catch some glimpses of how humanity affects scientific developments. Scientific discoveries were often made accidentally, while their interpretations are subjected to continuous scrutiny and revisions. The evolution of physics is thus a path of relentless logical arguments and debates. For this reason, the course will analyze whether those giant physicists were necessarily logically sound, hoping to learn from their struggles as much as from their glorious accomplishments. The sociological impacts of the physics discipline, its future development as a fundamental science and as a societal necessity or obligation, will also be examined.
