課程大綱 Course syllabus

         This course is practices-oriented and specifically offered for undergraduate students. It covers the basic concepts of general management and the contemporary managerial tools and practices. The foundation of management and the current business environments will be first discussed, followed by the ways of management in a dynamic environment. The four key management functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling will be then explored. In addition, some ongoing issues such as the Chinese Way of Management will be touched as well.

課程目標 Objectives

         Management is both an art and a science. After finishing this course, students are expected to:
1. Possess a systematic working knowledge of what management is;
2. Understand the relevance and applicability of management to their daily life;
3. Capture the "core" of various management concepts;
4. Apply these concepts to interpret and analyze real-world phenomena/ problems and to resolve the hands-on issues surrounding them.

授課方式 Teaching methods

         1.This course will center on issue/case discussions and lectures, but will include self-reflections, exercises, activities, and videos as well. Participants’ active engagements are highly encouraged and expected.
2.Participants are expected to form several groups. Each group is expected to lead one case discussion (oral) and accomplish a term project (oral and written)-Detail information will be provided in the class. Every group member should contribute equally to the group. Your final grade in this area will be based on peer review of your group members.
3.Individual participant is expected to write a 1-page summary for the cases they are assigned.
4.Reminders:
(a)The course has great interactive elements. I will ask critical issues/questions and seek responses all the way. I believe that it’s our collective efforts that can make the class successful. I also believe it’s “we” not “I” can maximize the learning effectiveness. Therefore, I expect we can become “learning partners” and form a “learning community” in which participants appreciate and learn from each other (NOTE: You can contribute to the community even with a “stupid” question/answer. So, be bold and confident. You truly can make it even though you have no habits to express in public).
(b)Please come to class on time. If you cannot come, please inform TA and professor in advance.
(c)The grading of written assignments will be significantly affected if participants fail to submit them on time. Additional points will be added to those who write additional assignments or offer additional services to the class.
