課程大綱 Course syllabus

Information Technologies (IT) and organizational Information Systems (IS) have become an increasingly important component of business operations and strategy. You can hardly see a business running without IT. Since the introduction of computers into businesses, we have seen the introduction of mainframes and minicomputers in the 60’s and 70’s. More recently, we have witnessed the introduction of personal computers, local and proprietary networks, and most recently open networks based on Internet technologies into the mainstream. The ubiquity of these systems demands that we, as effective managers, understand their roles in the operations of a modern business and how they can be used effectively to become a strategic weapon. This understanding must be built on sound IT concepts and creative applications to enable us to make more informed decisions.
In order to understanding the strategic role of IT in business, we need adequate knowledge in two separate but complementary disciplines: information technologies and management. It is difficult, if not impossible, to comprehend how information technology can support and reshape business strategy, without at least a rudimentary understanding of the technologies themselves. Understanding technology though is by no means a sufficient prerequisite to being able to develop business strategies that leverage IT. To complicate this further, high profile success stories, legendary failures, and general media and marketing hype are increasing the amount of noise we must overcome to make sound business decisions. The development and widespread adoption of the Internet, and a host of Internet technologies, has clearly shown that IT can no longer be relegated to the organizational background. Sound business strategy must account for, and take advantage of the opportunities afforded by sophisticated management information system.
