課程大綱 Course syllabus

Why are some countries rich and others poor? Why are some countries being highly developed in all aspects whereas others display stagnated or even backward development? Why is economic growth not the same as economic development? Furthermore, why do countries with similar starting points or endowments diverge into very different development paths? What are those factors that help a country grow/develop? What are those obstacles that prevent a country from growing/developing? What can we do about these issues?
This is a course for students who wish to understand and develop an integrated approach to the theory and practice of international economic development. We are going to look at various models of economic development that try to provide explanations to the above questions. We are also going to examine development paths adopted by different countries and the underlying rationale and causes for their success or failure. Theory and evidence on the major models of development and their application in specific country contexts will be critically analyzed and a critique of conventional economic theories and models will be developed.
