課程大綱 Course syllabus
　　　　　　　　 “Introduction to Western Literature” is designed to provide the college students -- especially English majors -- with a compact introduction to the Western cultural tradition. For English majors, students should not merely study English as a “practical” foreign language, but also learn the cultural and literary tradition in which language plays a significant role. To achieve these goals, this course will introduce and analyze a variety of Western literary classics for students to assist them in understanding the development of European cultural tradition and literary history. Also, this course aims to enhance students’ reading skills as well as students’ abilities of appreciating literary texts. In the first semester, “Introduction to Western Literature” will introduce and explore the stories from The Scriptures -- including both Old Testament and New Testament. Then this course shall lead students into the realm of Greek and Roman mythology. Near the end of the first semester, students will also read two great epics written by Homer, a great Greek poet. In the second semester, this course will examine and discuss the masterpieces of the Ancient World, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance.
「西洋文學概論」（“Introduction to Western Literature”）這門課程主要引領學生閱讀及欣賞許多重要而影響深遠的西洋文學經典作品。這些作品涵蓋了《舊約聖經》（Old Testament）和《新約聖經》（New Testament）裡的故事、《希臘羅馬神話》（Greek and Roman Mythology）故事、以及採用希臘羅馬神話故事來為創作背景的早期希臘文學與羅馬文學作品──包括了荷馬（Homer）的史詩、經典希臘悲劇（亦即希臘三大悲劇作家Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides的經典作品）、希臘喜劇、維吉爾（Virgil）的史詩、奧維德（Ovid）的詩歌等。同時，此課程亦會引領學生精讀、仔細剖析西方世界的上古時期、中世紀、及文藝復興時期之其他經典文學作品，例如薄伽丘（Boccaccio）的《十日談》（Decameron）、但丁的《但丁神曲》（The Divine Comedy）、佩多拉克（Petrarch）的十四行詩（sonnets）、及莎士比亞的詩歌與戲劇等作品。
從第一個學期初到第一個學期末，「西洋文學概論」將先做扎根的工作──亦即先引領學生閱讀《舊約聖經》和《新約聖經》的故事以及希臘羅馬神話故事。《聖經》（The Bible or The Scriptures）和《希臘羅馬神話》乃是西方文學、語言、與文化的最早源頭之一。無數的西方思想、文化、和文學（包括了歐美文學及兒童文學）典故以及語言典故（包括了無數的英文句型、單字、片語）皆來自《聖經》故事和《希臘羅馬神話》故事，因此其重要性實乃不容忽視。在第一個學期的前五週左右，本課程將聚焦於《舊約聖經》故事，包括了創世紀神話（Creation Myth）、人類被逐出伊甸園（The loss of the Garden of Eden or “paradise lost”）的故事、「巴比塔」（“The Tower of Babel”）的故事、「諾亞方舟」（“Noah’s Ark”）的故事，亞伯拉罕（Abraham）及其姪子（Lot）的故事、雅各的故事（The Story of Jacob）、約瑟的故事（“The Story of Joseph”）、《約伯記》（The Book of Job）、《出埃及記》（Exodus）──亦即有關摩西（Moses）一生──的故事、大力士參孫（Samson）的故事，「路德傳」（“The Story of Ruth”）、約拿的故事（“The Story of Jonah”）、大衛王（King David）從年輕歲月到晚年的故事、以及「所羅門王的審判」（“The Judgment of Solomon”）等經典故事。從第一個學期的第六週到期中考前左右，「西洋文學經典」這門課程將引領學生進入《新約聖經》的世界，仔細閱讀《新約》的故事，這些故事包括了──受洗者約翰（John the Baptist）一生的故事、耶穌基督的誕生（Nativity）、耶穌在荒野中的誘惑（temptation）、耶穌的治病及傳道（healing and teaching）等神蹟（miracles）、耶穌傳道時的所講的比喻性小故事（parables）、耶穌十二個門徒的故事、耶穌的被出賣（betrayal）的經過、耶穌受難（Crucifixion）及復活（The Resurrection）等重要故事及文化典故。前述的舊約故事與新約故事將以Pearl S. Buck的The Story Bible以及The Norton Anthology of Western Literature中所選錄的聖經故事為教材。從第一個學期的期中考後到學期末，「西洋文學經典」這門課程將以《希臘羅馬神話》故事為授課主軸，探討《希臘羅馬神話》在整體歐美文化、文學中的重要地位。本課程除了介紹希臘與羅馬主神的人名、特色、族譜及其職掌外，亦會引領學生閱讀無數有關希臘眾神和希臘、羅馬英雄的故事，包括了邱比特與賽姬（Cupid and Psyche）的愛情故事，希臘諸神與凡人的愛情小故事，海格力斯（Hercules）、西修斯（Theseus）、波西斯 （Perseus）等大英雄的冒險故事、「尋找金羊毛」（“The Quest of the Golden Fleece”）等探險故事、「特洛依戰爭」（“The Trojan War”）的故事、「木馬屠城記」的故事、以及希臘三大家族──包括了阿楚斯家族（The House of Atreus）、底比斯家族（The House of Thebes）、及雅典家族（The House of Athens）──數代恩怨情仇的故事等。此外，授課老師在此課程中亦會指出上述希臘羅馬神話故事是如何被後代歐美作家所挪用或改編，成為重要的文化與文學典故（cultural and literary allusion）。
在第二個學期裡，「西洋文學概論」這門課程主要引領學生欣賞、精讀、及剖析西方文化裡上古時期、中世紀、及文藝復興時期的經典文學作品。授課教師將於第一週透過自編講義來針對西方的文類（genre）、文學史（literary history）及文學運動（literary movement）等觀念、西洋文學的範圍與定義、以及西洋文學史的歷史發展脈絡做一番全方位的介紹及導論。自第二週起至期末考前，本門課程將聚焦於西洋文學中重要作家之作品──亦即從上古時期、中世紀、及文藝復興時期的經典文學作品，例如荷馬的《伊利亞德》（The Iliad）和《奧迪賽》（The Odyssey）、希臘悲劇三大悲劇作家Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides的經典悲劇、希臘的舊喜劇（old comedy）、羅馬的新喜劇（new comedy）、《羅蘭之歌》（The Song of Roland）、薄伽丘（Boccaccio）的《十日談》（Decameron）、《但丁神曲》（The Divine Comedy）、佩多拉克（Petrarch）與莎士比亞（William Shakespeare）的十四行詩（sonnets）、蒙田（Montaigne）的散文集（Essays）、馬基維利（Machiavelli）的《君王論》（The Prince）、以及莎士比亞的詩歌與戲劇等。
藉由大量而仔細地閱讀並賞析上述西方經典文學作品，「西洋文學概論」這門課程希望能提昇學生的文化知識、積極培養學生的英文閱讀和英文表達能力、分析能力、與批判性思考（critical thinking）能力，並為學生打下深厚而紮實的語言與文學、文化基礎。在「西洋文學概論」這門課程中，授課教師亦會帶領同學們逐字精讀、細細「咀嚼」西洋文學的重要詩人、劇作家、和散文家的經典作品，同時亦會提供修課學生許許多多以中文和英文書寫的相關參考資料、導讀文獻、以及相關網站資料。前述所有的相關參考資料和文獻、網路資料、自編補充講義、以及全數的PowerPoint教學檔案皆已掛於「中山網路大學」。
